HKBU to co-organise symposium on persistent organic pollutants in Asia-Pacific region

A symposium on “The Progress and Challenge of Effectiveness Evaluation of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the Asia-Pacific Region under the Stockholm Convention” will be held at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) this Friday (27 February). The Symposium will investigate major issues concerning the global monitoring plan for POPs under the Stockholm Convention. The convention was established in May 2001 to reduce the release of POPs to protect human health and the environment.

POPs refer to a group of chemicals, some of which are widely used in agricultural and industrial practices while others are unintentionally produced and released as a result of human activities around the globe.

At the Symposium, Professor Cai Zongwei, Head of the Department of Chemistry at HKBU, will present the Asia-Pacific Regional Report which was compiled and edited by a consulting team led by him. In addition, guest speakers will share views on topical issues such as current challenges posed by POPs, health and environmental hazards caused by them and air monitoring of POPs.

香港浸會大學將於本週五(二月二十七日)舉辦「The Progress and Challenge of Effectiveness Evaluation of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the Asia-Pacific Region under the Stockholm Convention」研討會,就「斯德哥爾摩公約」監控持久性有機污染物事宜進行討論。
