The University’s Institute of Creativity (IOC) and the Arts Education Section of the Education Bureau (EDB) jointly presented a “Dialogue with Celebrities Series – Nurturing Students’ Well-being through the Arts” last Friday (20 April). At the seminar, Professor Bernard Lim, Professor of the School of Architecture of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Architect, and Ms. Lo Kai-yin, Jewellery and Accessories Designer, Art and Cultural Advisor, shared with HKBU and secondary school students their views on “Creativity and Design for the Development of Individuals and Hong Kong”.

The speakers said culture is the foundation of design. Ms. Lo blends traditional Chinese culture with contemporary culture when designing accessories, which she said makes life fun. Professor Lim incorporates the element of space from ink painting into architecture. He said architecture is a part of our lives and a link between man and the environment while space gives people a sense of tranquility. The speakers also said creativity and design together build brands and, in doing so, promote the development of the economy. At present, Hong Kong’s designers and architects are well reputed in the international arena. The speakers also said culture, creativity and art cannot be separated. They encouraged students to broaden their horizons and develop their cultural literacy. By doing so, creativity will come naturally. They hope the students will one day contribute to the society through their creativity.

Professor Dominic Lam, Fung Hon Chu Endowed Chair of Humanics of IOC, and Dr. Vanessa Li, Senior Curriculum Development Officer (Visual Arts) of EDB, served as moderators.

IOC and EDB organised the Dialogue in order to promote creativity and arts education in the secondary school and tertiary education sectors and provide inspiration for the development of the art, culture and creative industries in Hong Kong. This seminar, one of the promotional events of the “Hong Kong Design Year 2012”, was broadcast by RTHK ETV live.
